Okay, so, today I was messing around with watches, like I often do, and I got it into my head to try and copy the OMEGA Speedmaster Super Racing. You know, the one with that cool honeycomb dial and that fancy Spirate System thingy? Yeah, that one. It’s a pretty complex piece, but I figured, why not give it a shot?
First thing I did was grab my tools. You can’t do anything without the right tools, right? I’ve got a decent set, nothing too crazy, just your standard watchmaker stuff. I also pulled up a bunch of pictures of the Speedmaster Super Racing online. I needed to get a good look at all the details.
Getting Started
I started by sketching out the basic design on a piece of paper. Just to get a feel for the proportions and how everything fits together. This watch has a lot going on, so I knew I had to take it step by step. The dial was the first big hurdle. That honeycomb pattern isn’t something you see every day.

After messing around with some materials, I finally managed to get something that resembled the honeycomb. It wasn’t perfect, but it was close enough for this little project. The Movement
Next up, the movement. Now, I’m no master watchmaker, so I wasn’t about to build a Spirate System from scratch. Instead, I decided to use a basic movement that I had lying around. It’s not as fancy as the OMEGA one, but it does the job. I modified it a bit, added some extra gears here and there. It was a challenge.
I spent hours tinkering with the movement, trying to get it to fit inside the case. Then there are the hands. They had to be just the right size and shape. Let me tell you, those tiny screws are a pain to work with. My fingers felt like sausages after a while. I dropped them like a million times.
Putting It All Together
The final step was putting it all together. Carefully assembled everything, piece by piece. It was like building a tiny, intricate puzzle. The case, the crystal, the bezel – each part had to fit perfectly. After a few more hours of work, it was finally done. My very own, somewhat rough, copy of the OMEGA Speedmaster Super Racing. And it actually worked!
It’s not perfect, of course. There are some rough edges, and it’s definitely not as refined as the real thing. But hey, I made it myself, and that’s something. It was a fun challenge, and I learned a lot in the process. Maybe I’ll try another watch next time. Or maybe I’ll just take a break and wear this one for a while. It’s a good conversation starter, that’s for sure.
