Okay, so, I’ve been eyeing the YSL College bag for a while. It’s just so classy, you know? But the price tag? Ouch. So, I thought, why not try to remake one myself? I mean, how hard could it be? Turns out, it’s a bit of a project, but hey, it’s a fun one!

First things first, I needed to find a good bag to use as a base. I rummaged through some online thrift stores and eventually found a black leather bag with a similar shape and size. The leather wasn’t perfect, but it was a good starting point.

Getting the Details Right

Next, I started obsessing over the details of the real YSL College bag. I spent hours looking at pictures online, zooming in on the stitching, the hardware, everything. The logo was going to be the trickiest part, obviously.

  • The Label: I learned that the label inside should have a style number and an art number on it.
  • The Logo: I also noticed how the “SAINT LAURENT” and “PARIS” are sometimes the same size on the logo. I’d need to keep that in mind.
  • The Serial Number: Apparently, real YSL bags have a serial number hidden behind the tag. Older ones have a 12-digit number, while newer ones have 3 letters and 10 digits. I even learned that the brand went through a name change, from Yves Saint Laurent to Saint Laurent Paris, I decided to include a fake serial number in my remake, just for fun.

I managed to find some metal letters that looked pretty close to the YSL logo. I carefully attached them to the front flap of my bag. It wasn’t perfect, but it gave the bag that signature YSL vibe.

I then spent a good chunk of time conditioning the leather to make it look a bit more luxurious. I used a leather conditioner I had at home, and it really made a difference. The bag started to look less like a thrift store find and more like something special.

The chain strap was another thing I had to figure out. The original bag has this beautiful, heavy chain. I searched around and found a similar chain at a craft store. It wasn’t exactly the same, but it did the trick. I attached it to the bag, and it instantly looked more complete.

In the end, my homemade YSL College bag isn’t an exact replica, but it’s pretty darn close! It was a lot of work, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. It’s got that YSL look without the YSL price tag. Plus, it’s kind of cool to have a bag that I made myself. It’s definitely a conversation starter!

So, if you’re thinking about trying to remake a designer bag, I say go for it! Just be prepared to put in some time and effort. And don’t be afraid to get creative. It’s all about having fun and making something you love.
